No Met Gala invite last week. But I got something better.
Last Tuesday, I had the honor of performing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, my second time playing at the Met. Just me and my acoustic guitar, playing Hawaiian slack key and contemporary island music in one of the most stunning spaces in New York.
Back to the Met
Two years ago, I performed in the Great Hall as UN delegates and guests entered the museum for a preview of the newly renovated Michael C. Rockefeller Wing. That night felt surreal, welcoming people into the Met with music.
This time, I was inside the wing itself. The Oceania room, surrounded by African, Oceanic, and ancient American art. Centuries of human creativity in every direction. It hit differently. You feel small in the best way.
The Sound
Playing acoustic guitar in a museum is unpredictable. Hard surfaces, open spaces, art installations that absorb and reflect sound in unexpected ways. But the team made it seamless. Huge thanks to Evan, Boris, and Evan for the fantastic sound. They made the room sing.
Gratitude
I still pinch myself that they keep letting me back. Music has taken me to some incredible places, but the Met remains one of the most meaningful.
To everyone who made this night possible: thank you.
