Aloha ‘oe, aloha ‘oe (Farewell to you, farewell to you)
E ke onaona noho i ka lipo (The charming one who dwells in the shaded bowers)
One fond embrace,
A ho’i a’e au (‘Ere I depart)
Until we meet again– Aloha ‘Oe by Queen Lili’uokalani
I have fond memories of Luau Night at Good Enough to Eat, spearheaded by the efforts of Lester Miyashiro so this evening was bittersweet. I was saddened by the news of Lester’s passing but truly honored to return to GETE to participate in this memorial and celebration of his life. He was an island transplant who made the Big Apple his home.
It’s special to do a Hawaiian music dinner show in New York, complete with Hawaiian food, slack key guitar, and hula. I even sang one by Lester’s favorite musician, Dennis Pavao, the Golden Voice of Hawaii.
Lester made the cupcakes (pictured) for the restaurant’s 30th birthday, and they were for sale in his memory. The staff joined me for a heartfelt group sing-a-long of Somewhere Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World. Memorial services were held in Honolulu.
