I will always cherish the times shared with Kumu Charles. We got to hang out backstage at HAPA performances, talk story, and drink kava. He was loved by many and his powerful voice and spirit will be missed.
I feel fortunate to have seen him perform with HAPA many times. Here is one funny memory that makes me smile. At the 2010 Nā Hōkū awards, I saw him walk by wearing his massive lei poʻo (pictured.) When I looked at my cellphone, I noticed that he was posting play-by-play comments on facebook. I posted on his wall, “You look great, but I’m glad that I’m not sitting directly behind you.” To which he replied, “Frickin Andrew! Bwahahahahahahaha.”
I will miss his chanting, stories, and laughs. Aloha ʻoe, Kumu Charles. Until we meet again.
