On April 16, 2024, the vibrant spirit of Hawaii came alive in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Hosted by Pilgrim Surf + Supply and publisher Rizzoli New York, the evening was a magical celebration of the publication of “Carissa Moore: Hawaii Gold: A Celebration of Surfing,” seamlessly blending music, culture, and community.
The very special evening started with a lei-making workshop with teenage girls from non-profit Laru Beya, allowing guests to connect with Hawaiian culture firsthand. As guests stepped into the venue, they were greeted by the Hawaiian slack key guitar and contemporary island tunes of Andy Wang, whose music set the perfect mood for the night ahead. The sensory experience continued with Chef Tony Liu of The Queensboro who delighted taste buds with Spam musubi and chocolate mochi, infusing the air with the irresistible flavors of the islands.
Against this backdrop, attendees were treated to a captivating talk story featuring none other than Carissa Moore herself, joined by Tyler Breuer, the host of the Swell Season Surf Podcast. Moore’s tales of triumph and dedication resonated deeply with the audience, offering a glimpse into the soul of a champion.
At the heart of it all was “Carissa Moore: Hawaii Gold,” a book that transports readers to the shores of Hawaii through stunning photography and heartfelt narratives. Authored by Moore herself, with a foreword by Tom Pohaku Stone, the book serves as a tribute to Hawaii’s rich surf heritage and the indomitable spirit of its people.
As the night came to a close, guests left Pilgrim Surf + Supply with hearts full and spirits lifted, carrying with them memories of an unforgettable celebration of surfing’s legacy. Thanks to welcomeing surf shop, Carissa Moore’s inspiring presence, and the warm embrace of the New York community, yesterday’s event will be remembered as a true ode to the spirit of aloha.
