“An intense anticipation itself transforms possibility into reality; our desires being often but precursors of the things which we are capable of performing.” – Samuel Smiles
It’s difficult for me to fathom these incredible opportunities to perform with HAPA — this time in Philadelphia and New York City during their 5-week mainland tour. HAPA’s music has been a huge inspiration to me since their self-titled debut album in 1993 so their friendship and support mean a lot.
I bought that CD at a mall in Farmington, CT and wore it out playing it on repeat. To be on stage with HAPA 18+ years later… who’d have thunk it?!?!
Barry surprised me by asking me if I’d open the New York show with a solo 25-minute set. Not everyone gets an opportunity to play for a packed house at the Highline Ballroom in New York so I humbly accepted the invitation. The result was spontaneous and fun. I may proudly say, “I did it… and have the photos to prove it.”
Performing with top Hawaiian entertainers in New York definitely makes me a better performer. I’ll cherish these memories forever.
Jake Shimabukuro has performed here in the past as well as marquee artists from Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder and Carlos Santana to Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Amy Winehouse. What an amazing experience for me to play solo and join HAPA for their 4-song hana hou (encore)!
Mahalo to HAPA and everyone who came out to the show.
